Esther Miriam Andreen was born on September 4, 1896 in New Haven, Connecticut to parents Gustav and Marie Andreen. Her father became the fourth president of Augustana College in 1901. Albrecht had two older brothers, Paul and Marion, and two younger, Gustav and Carl. Frank Rueben Almquist was born on October 14, 1905. He lived in Moline, Illinois, and attended Moline High School. He graduated in 1925, then entered Augustana College in the fall of 1929.
